Data from: Genomics of speciation and introgression in Princess cichlid fishes from Lake Tanganyika

2016

How variation in the genome translates into biological diversity and new species originate has endured as the mystery of mysteries in evolutionary biology. African cichlid fishes are prime model systems to address speciation-related questions for their remarkable taxonomic and phenotypic diversity, and the possible role of gene flow in this process. Here, we capitalize on genome sequencing and phylogenomic analyses to address the relative impacts of incomplete lineage sorting, introgression and hybrid speciation in the Neolamprologus savoryi-complex (the ‘Princess cichlids’) from Lake Tanganyika. We present a time-calibrated species tree based on whole-genome sequences and provide strong ev…

Measuring, comparing and interpreting phenotypic selection on floral scent

2022

Natural selection on floral scent composition is a key element of the hypothesis that pollinators and other floral visitors drive scent evolution. The measure of such selection is complicated by the high-dimensional nature of floral scent data and uncertainty about the cognitive processes involved in scent-mediated communication. We use dimension reduction through reduced-rank regression to jointly estimate a scent composite trait under selection and the strength of selection acting on this trait. To assess and compare variation in selection on scent across species, time and space, we reanalyse 22 datasets on six species from four previous studies. The results agreed qualitatively with prev…

Subtropical streams harbour higher genus richness and lower abundance of insects compared to boreal streams, but scale matters

2018

Aim: Biological diversity typically varies between climatically different regions, and regions closer to the equator often support higher numbers of taxa than those closer to the poles. However, these trends have been assessed for a few organism groups, and the existing studies have rarely been based on extensive identical surveys in different climatic regions. Location: We conducted standardized surveys of wadeable streams in a boreal (western Finland) and a subtropical (south-eastern Brazil) region, sampling insects identically from 100 streams in each region and measuring the same environmental variables in both regions. Taxon: Aquatic insects. Methods: Comparisons were made at the scale…

The Influence of Agricultural Support on Sale Prices of French Farmland: A Comparison of Different Subsidies, Accounting for the Role of Environmenta…

2013

In this paper, using data from individual transactions for the period 1994-2010 in the French NUTS2 region Brittany, we investigated how environmental regulations and transaction land regulations influence the price of sold plots. Regressions on three sub-samples of buyers were performed in order to assess whether different buyers have different attitude or plans regarding the farmland purchased: a sub-sample including only farmer buyers, a sub-sample including non-farmer individual buyers, and a sub-sample including non-farmer nonindividual buyers. Estimations were performed ignoring and accounting for spatial interactions (model SARAR). Results indicate that the price of land decreases wh…

Data from: Daphnia invest in sexual reproduction when its relative costs are reduced

2018

The timing of sex in facultatively sexual organisms is critical to fitness, due to the differing demographic consequences of sexual vs. asexual reproduction. In addition to the costs of sex itself, an association of sex with the production of dormant life stages also influences the optimal use of sex, especially in environments where resting eggs are essential to survive unfavourable conditions. Here we document population dynamics and the occurrence of sexual reproduction in natural populations of Daphnia magna across their growing season. The frequency of sexually reproducing females and males increased with population density and with decreasing asexual clutch sizes. The frequency of sex…

Colonoscopic screening of first-degree relatives of patients with large adenomas: increased risk of colorectal tumors.

2007

International audience; Background & Aims: The risk of developing colorectal neoplasia is not well established among family members of individuals with large adenomas and screening strategies remain under debate in this population. This study aimed at quantifying the risk of colorectal adenomas and cancers using colonoscopic screening in first-degree relatives of patients with large adenomas. Methods: This case-control study was performed in 18 endoscopic units of French non-University Hospitals. A colonoscopy was offered to first-degree relatives of 306 index cases with adenomas ≥ 10 mm, if they were alive, aged 40-75 and could be contacted by the index case. Among 674 relatives meeting th…
